A revealing study was published in 1993 by the Simmons Research Bureau, which reported that between six and eight million African Americans, or 24 percent of America’s black adult radio audience, listened to country radio. Levine states that "psychologically, socially, and economically, African-Americans were being acculturated in a way that would have been impossible during slavery, and it is hardly surprising that their secular music reflected this as much as their religious music did."
