Here’s the Booze Crew Sports Opening Day MLB Power Rankings. I will be updating a Top 10 teams in the MLB weekly, that will be in post form like this and also located on the homepage for the entire week. So lets get this started shall we?
1. Boston Red Sox. I don’t see how one can argue that the Red Sox are not the favorite to win it all this year. A serious injury is the only thing that is going to stop Adrian Gonzalez from having an MVP season, Carl Crawford is one of, if not the best OF in the game right now, and they have a rotation that includes Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, Clay Bouchholz and John Lackey. ’Nuff said.
2. Philadelphia Phillies. I know they are dealing with injuries right now, and if Chase Utley really doesn’t play at 100% this year I don’t know if they win the NL East. But with one of the best rotations of all time I can’t take them off their high horse just yet, no matter how badly I’d like too.
3. New York Yankees. I hate having them this high yet again, especially with how badly they got screwed in the off season, but I still have to have them up there with the lineup they’re throwing out there every day. The AL East is going to be very tight yet again, but unfortunately I look for A Rod to have a big year and Jeter to play pissed off and return to form for at least one more season.
4. San Francisco Giants. They won the World Series because of their pitching and timely hitting, and are going to need to do that again to compete in a competitive division as the Rockies and Dodgers will both be much improved. The Giants are going to need Kung Fu Panda to return to form and Posey to contiute to lead an often anemic offense. Although with Lincecum, Cain, and Sanchez it doesn’t really matter now does it?
5. Atlanta Braves. The Braves impressed last year with a lot of young talent and extremely good pitching. They also had the division won when Chipper Jones, Jason Heyward and Martin Prado were healthy. Now they’ve added a serious power threat in Dan Uggla and they’re pitching should only get better with a healthy Jurrjens and more experienced Tommy Hanson. Look out for Atlanta this year.
6. Texas Rangers. Yeah, they lost Cliff Lee and Vladdy, but the Rangers are definitely not in trouble. They still have a great lineup and solid starting rotation. Especially one that is good enough to win a pretty weak AL West. I’m interested to see how the whole Michael Young situation pans out though.
7. Colorado Rockies. If only they actually played a whole seasons worth of good games. I don’t know what it is about this team, but apparently they only think its important to win in August and September. With Tulowitski and Gonzalez leading their offense and Jimenez looking to put together another Cy Young type season, the Rockies will be much better this year. Infact, I think they’re going to win the NL West.
8. Minnesota Twins. I’d have them higher except I’m not totally sold on their rotation. I know Liriano’s real good, and Pavano won 17 games last year, but c’mon when Carl Pavano’s your number 2? Eh. I’m not totally sold yet. But if Justin Morneau can come back and actually stay healthy a full season alongside Mauer? Dirt.
9. Cincinatti Reds. Will they do it again? It’s very possible since that division is straight up awful, but at least the Brewers got better and will compete with Cincy. The Reds looked like a deer in headlights in the post season, looking like absolute ballsack. But you have to expect that from a franchise that absolutely never wins. I can’t wait for the day the Pirates actually make the playoffs, they’ll probably look like an entire team of Brooks Conrads.
10. Detroit Tigers. I wouldn’t worry too much about the Cabrera situation, especially because he’s obviously been drinking and driving blacked out asking people “Do you know who I am?” as he pounds one last scotch for years now. The guy’s a fat alcoholic baseball player. And who cares? He’s still fucking good and will continue to rake for Detroit. What do you think Babe Ruth didn’t get shit his pants drunk every night and eat 12 hot dogs after his games? Of course he did. You don’t need to be in shape to be good at baseball and Miguel proves that. Detroit will be much improved this year with Victor Martinez joining that offense. Who knows? Maybe people will actually talk about Justin Verlander for once. That guy is so damn underrated.
