Does anyone realize the Giants can lose to the Cowboys and still win the division?

Yea i said it. Just a little unknown playoff scenario for you…The G-MEN, believe it or not, can actally wrap up the NFC East title before they even play the Cowboys in week 17.

How do you figure? Well, this offseason when everyone was so focused on the new labor deal and the new kickoff rules, a change was made when determining tie-breakers for divison titles. For some reason the Hyperlinking isn’t working so google nfl tiebreaker procedures for division titles if you don’t believe me.

For the first time, when determining a tie within the division, the order of tie breakers goes:

  1. Head to Head record
  2. Record within the division
  3. record in common games played

Yes, common games played, not conference record will break the tie between the Cowboys and Giants. In that case, you take away the Packers and Saints games from the Giants, and they have a one game lead in that category with two common games to be played (Redskins, Jets).

SOOOO… if the Giants beat the redskins and Jets, and the Cowboys lose to the Eagles week 16, which is possible, then the Giants are NFC East champions.

…just sayin.

ps, how soon before ESPN or anyone else figures this out? I tweeted at Boomer Esiason about it, but if that doesn’t work my guess is that the first time you hear about this is during the Cowboys/Eagles game.
