I shall then put forward a hypothesis that suggests a “natural structure,” one which relates to the realms of meaning identified by Lonergan in Method in Theology (81–85). Indeed the correspondence is so close that one could almost suppose Lonergan had De Trinitate in mind when he wrote about the realms of meaning in Method. In the process of putting forward this hypothesis I also comment on various features of Augustine’s work which are further illuminated by Lonergan’s writings.
