(ESPN): The new head of the players’ union says his members are open to adding more wild-card teams for 2012 and possibly extending the division series to a best-of-seven.
Union head Michael Weiner says it’s also possible players would agree to cutting the regular season from 162 games, but that’s more problematic because it would cost teams revenue.
Other than having to re-live this past weekend, do you know what the last thing I need is? That’s right, another year long playoff format in professional sports.
Expanding the playoffs in baseball would be terrible. Even if they cut down the regular season for this, it still takes away
everything that the playoffs stand for. Like, the reason making the playoffs is awsome is because it’s so hard to do. How’s that quote from A League Of Their Own go, “The hard is what makes it great, if it wasn’t hard then everyone would do it.” Well, everyone is about to be in the playoffs, christ.
If push came to shove, I would be ok with expanding the first round of the playoffs to a seven game series, but if it went any further, you’d just be doing a disservice to the fans. I hate sitting around on off days as it is during the playoffs, I’d probably blow my head off if I was sitting around for a month and a half to play in the world series, completely takes away from the excitement. It’s like the rush of the playoffs gets kinda drowned out a little bit when it takes fucking forever. I mean, by the time the NBA and NHL finals are over I think everyone is kinda just fucking relieved that it’s over.
Anyone else kind of like the five game series by the way? Kind of installs a little more strategy for teams in the first round, as well as giving huge underdogs better shots at a first round upset.

Not to mention 8 teams currently make it. If you expand to anything less than 16 teams you won’t be able to do a standard bracket, the. What are you gonna do? Give the best team an a whole week off? A whole extra week off in baseball is completely different from a whole extra week off in football. The teams without a rested pitching staff will hardly be able to compete at the same level.
And it’s a unique league to other professional sports. 162 fucking games almost twice as many as the NHL and NBA. If you’re playing that many games it better be fucking hard to make it.
